As we face the unique challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Red Cross continues to deliver its lifesaving mission-to alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies-when and where it's needed most. To help blood donors better understand their possible exposure to this coronavirus, the Red Cross has begun COVID-19 antibody testing for completed blood, platelet and plasma donations in every state where the Red Cross collects blood.
The process of implementing this free antibody test at all blood drives and donation centers, not to mention creating broad public awareness, will cost the Red Cross an estimated $3 million a month. On average, we estimate testing approximately 400,000 blood, platelet and plasma donations per month at a cost of $7.50 per test (400,000 x $7.50 = $3 million).
With support from generous donors, the Red Cross currently plans to provide COVID-19 antibody testing of donated blood, platelets and plasma for at least four months—an initial cost of $12 million. Depending on funding availability, the Red Cross hopes to continue offering this important service for a longer period, providing free COVID-19 antibody testing of donated blood and blood products for at least 12 months as we navigate the many unknowns of this pandemic.
If you would like to contribute to our fundraising efforts, no act of generosity is too small to make a difference!
