This year, we have the unique opportunity to advance medical science; to help with research to better understand and treat lymphatic disease, a condition often associated with congenital heart disease. This is a time where we can improve the lives of children living with CHD—giving them a longer, healthier life.
Interventional Pediatric Cardiologist, Dr. Sanjay Sinha, head of the Pediatric Lymphatic Intervention Program at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital and Medical Advisory Board Member for the Live Like Noah Foundation is conducting two research projects vital to better understand and treat lymphatic disease. The Live Like Noah Foundation is raising funds to support his work. Our goal is to raise $50,000 by June 7, 2020.
Noah Bella Michaelis, our daughter, was born at the right time to survive birth and early childhood due to advances in medical science. But the surgical procedure (Fontan Procedure) to treat her complex heart condition is not without its complications. As a result, Noah developed life threatening lymphatic disorders and was not able to survive to adulthood. She passed away at age 13 while recovering from a lymphatic procedure. Lack of advancements to treat her ongoing complications cut her life short. And while the worldwide population of patients with Fontan circulation has grown to an estimated 50,000 to 70,000 in 2018, only 40% of patients reach 18 years of age. Live Like Noah Foundation hopes to make a difference with the research done at UCLA and improve the outcomes for these kids.
Noah took every challenge and obstacle head on while living with CHD.
On June 7th, we will be participating in our first ever Spartan Race to support this critical research. Inspired to race by Noah and the many children who live with CHD and lymphatic disorders, we hope to be a force for good. The 5K race, held in beautiful Salinas, CA (near Monterey), will be filled challenging hills and fields along with 20 obstacles to tackle. We honor Noah for all the hurdles she and so many other heart kids have climbed and continue to climb over.
