We have a long story to tell you.
In 2015 a young Kurdish Syrian couple and their son settled in Mahone Bay, NS. Before long the husband, Rezan Iso, established a successful tailoring business in Bridgewater and, with his wife, Shahnaz Hamo, soon became well-known and well-liked in their community. So much so that many community members joined forces to help them sponsor more of their family to come to Canada.
By the summer of 2018, applications were submitted through the Private Sponsorship of Refugees Program to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to sponsor Shahnaz’s parents, a single brother, a single sister, another brother, his wife and small baby (another baby has arrived since then) and a cousin who had all fled Syria for Turkey. The sponsorship group called themselves South Shore Refugee Family Reunification (SSRFR) and worked tirelessly to raise the money that would be needed to support such a large family group for their first year in Canada. Time passed. Everyone waited, not always patiently. By any reckoning the family should have arrived in the fall of 2019 or early 2020. Accordingly, a house was found that could accommodate such a large group. And then came the pandemic in March 2020. Almost all refugee travel was shut down and there has been very little movement since.
Shahnaz and Rezan also have added a baby girl to their family and Rezan is looking forward to his brothers-in-law arriving to work with him in his business here in Nova Scotia. The extended Hamo family still waits in Turkey and the group in Mahone Bay has used some of their resources keeping a place ready for them. Also there is one more family member now and the amounts sponsors are expected to provide have increased. The group still has $50,000 but needs to raise $15,000 more.
