On October 24, 2020, Joe Daly and I will be attempting to summit Africa's highest mountain and one of the 7 summits of the world, Mt. Kilimanjaro located in Tanzania, Africa. Prior to our attempt we will be working with The Sound of a Smile Program to volunteer at the Father Christmas Academy, located in Arumeru, Tanzania, and which is managed by the Tanzania School Foundation. 100% of the money raised through our campaign will go to the Tanzania School Foundation.
Just want to give a shout out to Sam Fuller and The Sound of a Smile Program for helping facilatate this climb for charity. Below is a bit more about The Tanzania School Foundation.
Fr. Christmas Academy opened its doors on it’s new campus in 2018 to offer a quality education that would otherwise not be available to the many of our students. We offer an education focused on individuality, creativity and excellence.
FCA was founded by the Tanzania School Foundation. Witnessed by TSF, the local schools are overcrowded, dilapidated and government educational investments are minimal. Tanzania spends less (as a share of GDP) on the education sector than most of its regional peers. The child population in Tanzania is currently 22 million and is expected to reach 58 million by 2050. Something had to be done…so we did it. (We are still building it!)
At FCA we offer quality, safe education for students. We set high expectations for all of our students with the anticipation that they will end poverty for their families and community. They will be the future leaders of their country.
We seek out bright students from families who cannot afford an English education. We also accept students whose parents are able to pay some or all of the school fees but who have been unsuccessful in finding a school near the village of Mlangarini. All FCA parents invest their time in a variety of volunteerism (cleaning, cooking and maintaining our vegetable garden), which helps the school reduce overhead expenses. We also hold regular meetings with the parents, both one-on-one and as a group, to ensure that they are as invested in their child’s education as we are.
FCA is not just about the students, it is about their families and the village community. We are all working together to empower the students to become thoughtful, capable future leaders of Tanzania.
We are both fired up to attempt this summit while raising money and volunteering for a great cause, with some great people. We plan on giving updates of our progress during the actual trek, and we greatly appreciate any support that can be given to the Father Christmas Academy.
Thank you all in advanced, and if you would like to read more about The Sound of a Smile Program or FCA, feel free to check out their websites!
