Help Neglected and Abused Animals: Kansas City’s PAWS really needs your support
Animal rescue workers see miraculous recoveries and transformations---but they see the worst of humanity, too. That’s especially true for the team at PAWS (KC’s own Protective Animal Welfare Society), a dog rescue that primarily helps abused and neglected dogs, the ones that other organizations can’t help.
The wonderful team at PAWS steps up when others can’t, sheltering animals in need, repairing the damage done, working with agencies to fight animal abuse/neglect, and finding forever families to adopt these dogs. They do the work because they love it, and because it’s needed, and they are rewarded in love, tail wags, and snuggles.
But tail wags can’t keep the doors open. That’s why PAWS also runs a dog daycare and boarding business, which is part of their nonprofit organization. In a normal year, the daycare and boarding side of things is enough to cover rent, staff, utilities, and supplies. But 2020 hasn’t been a normal year. Right now, people are working from home (if they’re lucky) and keeping their dogs home, too.
Pandemics Don’t Stop Animal Abuse
Since quarantine began, PAWS has helped over 200 dogs by getting them to safety and providing them with care. Half of those were transferred to other rescues, and the other half were kept as PAWS dogs, where they have received rehabilitation, additional medical care, training, and other services to help them become adoptable. The good news is that adoptions are up---compared with previous years, PAWS has had double the number of adoptions in 2020, wonderful news for those dogs and their new families.
But adoption fees don’t cover the costs of rescuing and caring for PAWS dogs, which often have extensive medical needs from past abuse and neglect. This year, PAWS has paid over $11k in veterinary expenses alone, with about $12k more owed. This is money spent to repair and rehabilitate dogs who have been victims of the worst abuse and neglect.
