Female Heroes during Pandemic Crisis in India
The news has shown us the severeness of the second wave Corona crisis in India. A new deadly mutant of the virus is spreading rapidly in the country. With the medical system that has totally collapsed, thousands of people die every day.
The world watches India with a distant glance of fear and unbelief in their eyes. Multiple countries are sending aid, in particular oxygen and blood, which is a matter of life or death for the infected.
Despite the fact that India is the biggest producer of vaccinations, awareness campaigns are not reaching people faster than the spread.
India’s economy is shaken leaving citizens without work and income. Many are unable to access government resources and left to fend for themselves.
However, the country has heroes of its own, fighting through this crisis often without means, only with inventiveness and persistence.
In May of 2020 Kalbeliya World was formed in solidarity with twelve Kalbeliya dancers and with great feats, we are live streaming dance classes and cultural content with students representing more than twenty countries.
Kalbeliya Dancers of Rajasthan, are heroes fiercely working during this crisis to provide income to protect their families and communities.
Support a hero so she can continue to help others.
What you can do?
1. TAKE A DANCE CLASS
Support women in business
Register for a $10 dance class or give a class to a friend
Online dance classes are the only income for most Kalbeliya dancers during lockdowns.
2. SHARE OUR STORY
This Fund allows us to support prevention and act quickly in emergencies as well as support existing community programs.
Together with the community, we provide direct help at the grassroots level in three cities and surrounding villages
Our daily contact in the community allows us to know where the emergencies are.
Many of the Kalbeliya Teachers have long-running community support programs that they previously self-funded. These programs provide essentials to hundreds of families.
The Kalbeliya Artists Communities in Rajasthan
Kalbeliya (Kal.bel.e.ya) is an ethnic community of talented performers, dancers, musicians, singers, and craft artisans living in Rajasthan, India.
The Kalbeliya community is praised for their epic performances throughout India and the world and are historically marginalized, facing barriers to living wages, access to resources, and inclusion.
Pre-COVID19, female Kalbeliya dancers earned a low income as stage performers and dance teachers to international tourists and are lead income earners responsible for many extended family members.
During COVID19, all Kalbeliya artists were left with zero income, no-government support programs, and further isolation, creating more threats to the already challenged community.
What is Kalbeliya World?
Kalbeliya World is a start-up and self-employment support program working alongside Kalbeliya female artists from Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Pushkar.
Kalbeliya World provides a gateway providing zoom access, online registrations, global transactions, email customer service, marketing, wifi, content development, online training, and a female tech buddy.
Tech buddies and three coordinators volunteer to transfer skills and provide daily support. Teachers receive 100% of dance class earnings.
Solidarity projects are built into our model with immediate support programs that benefit the Kalbeliya community during this challenging time and creates long-term growth.
Kalbeliya World seeks to provide stable incomes, digital literacy, and self-employment opportunities for the entire community.
