Imagine a scenario in which more than half of your neighborhood is obliterated by a massive wildfire destroying everything you own? That is exactly what happened when an illegal campfire ignited the Soberanes Fire on July 22, 2016 which would then burn for 3 months and destroy over 57 homes in the Palo Colorado community of Big Sur.
The Upper Rocky Creek Road of the community was hit particularly hard with the fire destroying 28 out of just 43 structures. Unforgiving winter rains fell on our barren hillsides and a portion of our road, just below an already fire damaged retaining wall, gave way taking a 90 foot section of road with it. What is left is a road just barely wide enough for a passenger vehicle when the road is dry, but due to the instability of the road we are forced to use smaller ATV’s or walk during heavy winter rains just to get our families and basic necessities home.
Our small community has been hit hard by Covid-19, leaving many of us out of work and making grants and fundraising events nearly impossible. In just the last few weeks, California has exploded with wildfires, leaving our community surrounded by the Carmel, River, and Dolan fires. This has been yet another reminder of our vulnerability and reinstates our need to rebuild our safe road home.
For the last 4 years our community has worked tirelessly to raise money for the road repair in a grassroots fashion through events, grants, and 100 percent resident participation. This is, unfortunately, not enough. With no funds available from federal, state, or local governments we are asking for your help to reach our goal so our community can begin to rebuild, and our residents can once again safely get home. Without repair the road will fail and access to our 89 residents will be lost forever.
Even though we still need $389,000 to finish, our goal for this campaign is $100,000 as we know there are so many out there in need of support. All donations are tax deductible and will be processed through our 501(c)3 non-profit fiscal sponsor Community Association of Big Sur (CABS) FEIN 77-0091132.
