Food that’s healthy and fresh is a human right. Access to nourishing meals shouldn’t be limited by your housing situation, but for too many West Michigan families, that’s the reality.
Slow Food of West Michigan and Family Promise saw an opportunity to bring good food to local families in need. Your donation will purchase CSA shares from West Michigan farmers, and connect them with families recently assisted into permanent housing by Family Promise of Grand Rapids.
What is a CSA?
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a way to buy local food directly from a farmer. You purchase a “share” and become a farm “member.” The farm then provides a specified amount of vegetables regularly throughout the growing season.
Our goal this Giving Tuesday is to raise $3000 that will:
Purchase 6 full CSAs or 12 half CSAs
Connect 24 family members to local food
Support 2 local small scale family farms
As part of this initiative, families will also receive simple, culturally appropriate recipes created by volunteer chefs, as well as the kitchen tools they need to make the most of their CSAs. Since we understand the limitations families may have on time and accessibility to transportation, the CSA shares will be generously picked up and delivered by local community volunteers.
About the Organizations:
Family Promise partners with families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless by helping them get back on their feet so they can create a stable lifestyle for their children. Family Promise has helped over 4,000 children and 1,500 families build a strong foundation for their family’s future by providing emergency services, permanent housing, case management, mentoring and furniture donation services.
Slow Food West Michigan is a non-profit dedicated to promoting fair food systems through educational events, promoting local food producers, and supporting other like-minded organizations. Slow Food stands against the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the world.
