A year ago, for my birthday I launch my first fundraiser for my fencing club. We raised enough money last year to cover all the expenses for the club season, so no kid had to pay to participate. (This is important at my school because money is a barrier for a lot of kids, especially this past year. ) Our first year was a smashing success and we even got written up in the newspaper and I revived my Girl Scout Gold Award for my work on the project.
I’m turning 17 today and I want to dedicate my birthday to my fencing club! We are raising funds for next year to make sure we can do it again. Last year our club impacted kids’ lives more than I had ever imagined. All the students felt that the club gave them an outlet for addressing the stress of Covid. One of the graduating seniors loved it so much that she included the requirement of a fencing club as part of her college search and selection. Another young student who was shy and quiet coming into the club liked it so much that he joined the year-round fencing academy and just competed in his first tournament. ( For context - it took me two years to learn enough to go my first competition.)
So - I am excited to be 17! I’m excited for my senior year! I ‘m am excited I get to fence at Nationals this summer, but most of all I am excited about a second year of fencing club! Please consider celebrating my birthday by making a donation to help make it a reality. Oh and I passed my drivers’ test – which my mom is excited about!
