The emergence of COVID-19 has exposed the true magnitude of socioeconomic inequity inherent in our social systems and the fragility and limitations of the very programs designed to address it. Even before the current global health crisis, food insecurity throughout New York State was deepening. More than 2.4 million New Yorkers continue to suffer from food insecurity, including more than 900,000 children (Food Bank for NYC). As a result of the crisis, demand at food banks has doubled, and the lack of fresh, high-quality fruit, vegetables and meat is especially profound.
Sky High Farm:
Sky High Farm was founded in 2010 with the sole purpose of addressing food insecurity in underserved communities. Everything grown and raised on Sky High Farm is donated to food banks and food pantries in New York State and New York City. At Sky High Farm, agricultural production and food donations merge with our commitment to regenerative farming practices to help steward the land and mitigate climate change. Access to fresh and nutritious food is a basic human right and is fundamental to creating and ensuring social equity. To date, we've donated more than 68 tons of our fresh produce and meat to food banks and food pantries in our region. But we can do even more with your help!
The funds raised by this Gofundme will be used to help us:
1. INCREASE PRODUCTION
We plan to double on-site farm production in our next growing season by opening more land, hiring more staff and interns, increasing irrigation capacity, and further expanding the no-till regenerative methods we're committed to.
2. SCALE UP DISTRIBUTION
Purchase trucks and refrigeration units to transport and store more food for more people in need.
3. SUPPORT OTHER REGIONAL FARMS
By purchasing and distributing produce from a wide network of local farms we can increase our donation capacity and help sustain small-scale farmers at the same time.
4. CREATE INCLUSIVE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
In partnership with:
Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) – establish an opportunity for BPI alumni leaving the prison system to work at Sky High Farm to build skills in farming, social entrepreneurship and food justice.
Children and Family Services Residential Center, Red Hook, NY – educate adjudicated youth on horticulture practices, processing, packaging, design and entrepreneurship.
