In the Fall of 2011 Doni's mom, Deb, was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. This was a shock to the entire family. Deb was always very active and a supportive pillar for the people she loves. It was very difficult to see someone so strong facing something life threatening. After 3 surgeries and 6 rounds of chemotherapy, Deb began the task of recovering in February of 2012. I realized that my life partner needed a reason to get out of bed. This amazing woman and lover of dogs needed a puppy as far as I was concerned! That's when Doni and his brother, Sirius Black entered our lives. They were beautiful 8 week old Lab puppies. Deb had 6 weeks before she returned to her job as a nurse anesthetist. This would be her opportunity to train the puppies....and train them, she did! They quickly grew to be not just good, but great pets....members of our family! Sirius belonged to our son and daughter in law and he moved to California at 6 months of age. Doni became Deb's constant companion and was an integral part of her healing.
2 years later, Deb entered Doni in a DockDogs event in Charleston, South Carolina. This event was the beginning of an adventure into the world of dog sports. Doni and Deb excelled and made it to the World Championships for the first time in 2014. When Sirius Black returned to Charleston with his family, he began competing as well. This was the beginning of Team Skinny Dip and the team quickly grew as family members added their dogs to the team and began competing. Unfortunately in the summer of 2017, we lost Sirius Black to renal cancer that had metastisized to his lungs and bones. The loss of Sirius was heartbreaking.
Team Skinny Dip continues to compete in DockDogs in Siruis' honor and plans to attend DockDogs World Championships in October with five dogs on the team, all members of our family.
We believe that it takes an entire community to heal and support a family member facing a difficult health crisis, like cancer. Our goal is to give back by assisting charities like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in their research efforts to not only cure but prevent life threatening cancers.
I hope you will join our team and help us reach our goal!
