In October of 2013, Carl and Annette Thornton created The Five Star Pizza Adoption Fund through United Way. The primary goal is to help families who would like to adopt or obtain guardianship but are discouraged by the unforeseen financial burdens. The fund operates in conjunction with the United Way of St. Joseph County and United Way of Branch County in Southwestern Michigan.
The fund was established in honor of Carl's sister, Lynnsue, whom his parents adopted from Korea as a baby in 1972. Today, Lynnsue is thriving in New York City where she has lived for more than 20 years. Lynnsue has a Master's Degree in Social work and works as a social worker in Harlem. She has 2 children with her husband, Craig, who is an attorney for New York University.
To date, the fund has raised over $38,000.00 and assisted with 34 adoptions and guardianships.
In 2020, the Five Star Pizza Adoption Fund plans to raise $15,000 to aid families in susccessful adoptions but, most importantly, they hope to promote and increase the number of children adopted by good, loving parents.
