Six years ago, the Filipino American community who serves St. Philomena’s Parish in Livingston, NJ started the Annual Simbang Gabi celebration. The Parishioners and Guests of St. Philomena gathered this night for the Eucharistic celebration the way it was celebrated in the Philippines. We prayed as a community and shared in the body and blood of the Savior of us all, Jesus Christ. In the backdrop were colors, music, attires that subtly reminds everyone of the fabrics of the Filipino culture.
The celebration is capped by the fiesta like get together of hundred of people sharing the food, dancing in the music and enjoying the company of the community which are all manifestations of the hospitality that Filipinos are known for.
The 6th Annual Simbang Gabi celebration will continue with the in-person Eucharistic celebration while practicing all safety measures. We will not be gathering for food and party after the mass but instead, will be joining together in spirit as we remember with fondness all the years that we all got together for this special night of fiesta.
Part of the goal of the Simbang Gabi is to raise funds for the financial needs of the Parish of St. Philomena, which needs our help at this time more than ever. We ask that we continue to show the Filipino trait of hospitality but this time transformed into charity and generosity as we get together and pass the hat for our second home, St. Philomena.
