I am a mother of an addict. I spent years hiding this fact. Why? was I ashamed? embarrassed? felt guilty? Yes - and it did not do me nor my family/friends any good! Why is it that we shame those who struggle with their behavioral choices when they choose alcohol or drugs but we do not shame those who choose to overeat and smoke. Why is it different to need constant medical care when lifestyle choices lend to diseases but needing mental health care is withheld to those who struggle with drugs or alcohol? Our world has changed drastically in the last 20 years when it comes to the medical field. Prescriptions have been handed out like candy on Halloween - only every single day since the late 90's. Over 65% of those who are struggling with drug abuse started with a prescription from a medical provider - not knowing how it would affect them in ways they were not warned about nor could they ever imagine. MANY LOST THEIR LIVES. Overdosing on a "safe" prescription Some, struggle with trying to reduce their dependence on the prescription only to be told they cannot be helped or to take another drug to offset the withdrawal symptoms.
My co-founder lost her son 3 years ago from a spiraling case of drug addiction that started with a prescription.
My daughter had just suffered her 7th overdose...not fatal but still scary.
WE HAD TO DO SOMETHING TO STOP THIS MADNESS IN OUR COMMUNITY!
So -we formed The CATE Foundation - Conquering Addiction Through Education. We are entering our 3rd year in existence and our biggest challenge is the STIGMA that surrounds us.
