Ask any Sickle Cell Disease patient and he or she will tell you that Sickle Cell Crises do not stop for pandemics.
Hi, my name is Mapillar Dahn and I am the founder of MTS Sickle Cell Foundation, Inc., a non profit organization who over the last four years, has been a leading voice in bringing awareness to sickle cell disease as well as providing support to families affected by SCD.
I founded MTS Sickle Cell Foundation with nothing but passion. There I was, a single mother of three young daughters who all suffer from sickle cell disease, looking around for support but finding nothing. That feeling has propelled me to do for families what I wish others would do for me, essentially becoming the change that I wanted to see. And in just four years, with very little funds, we’ve been able to sponsor over 100 children battling sickle cell disease to a week-long summer camp, prevent families from being evicted, help reinstate vital utilities, host annual kickball tournaments to bring awareness to sickle cell disease, conduct outreach visits to sickle cell patients who are hospitalized, mail FREE sickle cell awareness information throughout the United States, provide educational material for awareness events, provide parking passes and food vouchers for sickle cell families at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, attend health fairs to spread awareness of sickle cell, send birthday presents to sickle cell patients all over the United States, provide financial assistance to families all over the United States for rent, medicine, burial expenses and a host of socio-economic needs, host annual holiday breakfast and toys giveaway, and more.
We recognize the unique concerns of sickle cell families during the COVID-19 pandemic and are amplifying our efforts to provide with information and support services.
Since COVID-19, with the support of our partners, we have shipped gift cards to families all across the United States and are gearing up to send families reusable cloth masks to help navigate our new normal. We've also delivered masks to LifeSouth Community Blood Centers in Atlanta, GA as well as the hematology/oncology department at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, while still continuing to serve in our usual capacity.
The socio-economic effects of Sickle Cell Disease causes a lot of stress on families and COVID 19 has added an additional dynamic to an already dire situation. Our community is experiencing an added layer of pain during this pandemic because patients are having to cope with indescribable pain at home, some lasting weeks, in order to avoid the risk to contracting COVID-19 at the hospital.
Caregivers are finding it hard to work, thereby creating a struggle to be able to provide the basics for their families.
100% of the donations received by MTS Sickle Cell Foundation goes directly into helping us raise awareness of sickle cell disease and providing support services to families.
Funding from this fundraiser will help us continue to send gift cards, masks, and other relief services as we continue to assess the needs of the sickle cell community.
Thank you so much for you time and your donation.
