Secular AZ has partnered with a Constitutional lawyer and experienced teacher of founding principles and government responsibilities to build an interactive curriculum that sparks student participation and research on how to engage, participate and lead communities in the process of a representative democracy.
Why is this important?
Civic knowledge and public engagement in America is at an all time low. A 2016 survey found that only 26% of Americans can name all three branches of government. Public trust in government is at only 18%, and voter participation has reached its lowest point since 1996. (Source: Annenberg Public Policy Center)
We will train experienced teachers in at least five high schools in our curriculum to present the program as an adjunct to scheduled civics classes or an extracurricular activity. We will test students' knowledge before entering the program and after completion to be able to demonstrate effectiveness. One adult class will be offered at each school during the same time frame.
Please help us shore up Civics and Government education for Arizona's high school students. Thank you for your support!
