Hi friends and family! This year, I have the great privilege of serving on the Shepherd Center Junior Committee's executive board as one of the Auction Committee Co-Chairs! For those who may not be familiar, the SCJC is part of the Shepherd Center Foundation, and we raise money for Shepherd Center's recreation therapy program, with our major fundraising event being Derby Day each spring.
This year, my goal is to raise at least $1000, and I would love your support along the way! No donation amount is too small because when we all pitch in a little, we can do big things as a community. So please consider donating any amount you feel comfortable with, and together we can make a difference in the lives of Shepherd patients!
WHAT IS SHEPHERD CENTER?
Shepherd Center is the largest rehabilitation hospital in the nation specializing in medical treatment, research and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain and other neurological conditions. Shepherd Center’s mission is to return catastrophically injured patients to the highest level of functioning possible, enabling them to continue their lives with hope, dignity and independence.
WHAT IS RECREATION THERAPY?
The rec therapy program allows patients to lead healthy and active lifestyles as independently as possible through various recreation activities and daily activities we often take for granted. It increases physical fitness, self-confidence and social interaction, all of which make a huge impact in positive patient outcomes and helps get them back to a sense of normalcy after having experienced a life changing injury.
Most insurances don't cover the cost of rec therapy, and Shepherd Center's program costs $2 million per year to maintain. For us to sustain current offerings and be able to keep making improvements to the rec therapy program, the SCJC fundraises to help with these costs.
WHAT IS DERBY DAY?
Derby Day has been a marquee spring event in Atlanta, GA over the past 37 years that features great food and drinks, a silent auction, as well as casino and race day games. Guests enjoy eating, drinking, playing, and bidding to celebrate the fastest two minutes in sports while raising money for Shepherd Center patients. All proceeds from Derby Day directly impacts the lives of Shepherd patients by bringing value and meaning back into their lives through recreation therapy.
