S2S partners with local non-profits to identify individuals facing homelessness who are ready to work. S2S connects those individuals with multi-family housing partners who have open positions that agree to provide free or heavily discounted housing. It’s a private-sector solution that benefits both the homeless and business. The apartment industry amidst COVID-19 is still hiring essential positions necessary to run their properties and S2S is providing them with great candidates who are becoming valuable employees. The real estate industry loves this idea because it eases their hiring process - S2S participants are pre-screened, qualified candidates who consistently result in a lower turnover rate than other company hires. S2S is working closely with their apartment company industry partners on adapting to new hiring policies during the COVID-19 response. S2S case management is also working closely with current program participants to assist them during this time with any crisis – emotional, physical, financial – to ensure they know what resources they have access to and ensure their long-term success. S2S and its network of apartment company industry partners are uniquely positioned to provide both employment and housing opportunities to get individuals and families back on a path to self-sufficiency. To date a whopping 93% of participants have not re-entered homelessness services.
Shelters to Shutters (S2S) is a non-profit offering employment, housing and support services to individuals facing situational homelessness – three factors critical to an individual moving out of homelessness to self-sufficiency. The impact this pandemic and economic crisis is having and will continue to have on at-risk populations like those individuals and families experiencing homelessness is hard to fathom. Each day there are more vulnerable with less resources and options for survival.
