We (David Saltzman and Mark Bezos) had the extraordinary opportunity to work alongside each other for a decade at Robin Hood. In that time, we “shared the foxhole” in the battle against poverty a number of times – from Robin Hood’s response after 9/11 to helping NYC get back on its feet after Hurricane Sandy. We are excited to once again join forces to help Robin Hood assist poor New Yorkers who have been absolutely crushed by COVID-19.
We have three asks of you:
Please contribute what you can to the Rise Up New York! campaign – we recognize that many of you might be personally affected by this crisis and any amount is appreciated. $5, $10 – whatever you feel comfortable with.
Please pass this GoFundMe on to people you know, and ask them to do the same.
Please use social media to encourage others to help and tune into the “Rise Up NY!” benefit, which will be broadcast across the NYC region on May 11th.
As is always the case when disaster strikes, the poor are suffering disproportionately. They are losing their jobs and their lives at staggering rates. The number of new families relying on food pantries has tripled. Remote learning is simply not possible for homeless children living in shelters without computers and wi-fi. But there is hope…Robin Hood is there – providing those pantries with much needed money to replenish their shelves, putting wi-fi into those shelters – and money directly into the pockets of those who are slipping through the cracks of the government response. But so much more remains to be done.
Together, we can do what good people do in times like this: we band together and do whatever we can to help our neighbors.
