In January of this year, I lost my mother partly due to complictions from a rapid onset of polymyositis, a rare autoimmune disease that causes muscle weakness. In most cases it affects the muscles of the upper arms and hip areas making it very difficult or impossible to get around. Its something pretty much no one ever hears of since the symptoms are so scattered that its hard to make the connections and proper diagnosis. There is no cure for the different types of myositis, but there are treatments that can let people have productive lives. The Myositis Assocation exists to support people with this disease, increase awareness, and help fund research.
On October 7th, , I’m running the Chicago Marathon. I was accepted into it a few weeks before she passed away, but I feel like this is a great opportunity to raise some money for an association that can help people living with this disease. I haven’t opened much about what happened to my Mom (hence the late fundraiser), but it hasn’t been lost on me that all the miles I’ve done during training and during the race are in honor of her and people living with this disease. Please donate if you can!
