On May 3rd, 2021, Sergio M. Salgado , an East Las Vegas resident of 63 years passed away from Stage 4 cancer. He was a prominent leader in the Latino community and always set out to benefit the less needy, especially the children in both his neighborhood and fellow communities. In early 2000, his value in education, and being a huge proponent of the arts, led him to travel with the Mexican Patriotic Committee to Anapra, Mexico, a neighborhood nestled against the U.S.-Mexican border, where he would bring school supplies to children and school teachers. Salgado’s deep value in education was a big influence on his own children as well as his nephews and grandchildren. He was a full supporter of their journeys into photography and cinematography and his son, Sergio “Checko” Salgado, is currently the founding photography instructor at Equipo Academy which is a college preparatory charter school located in the same neighborhood that the Salgados have called home for over 50 years.
Checko Salgado’s goal as Equipo’s photography instructor is to create a successful photography program for the school, a vision Sergio Salgado had in mind one day for the children of East Las Vegas. This program is only in its 2nd year but Checko has dedicated his skills and father’s influence in creating an environment that provides students a chance to connect with their community, cultures, and provide a creative outlet just like Checko’s father did for him. Checko has already influenced many students at Equipo to explore the world of photography by having them explore how to use camera equipment and bringing a Resident Gallery Show to The Clark County Wetlands Park where student work was displayed for visitors. Even though Checko has been able to support student work with his personal equipment, his influence has created quite a demand for his classroom and is reaching out to the community for help. In honor of Sergio Salgado’s deep love for education and his passion for bringing arts into his community, Checko Salgado is setting up a GoFundMe to create a successful photography program for Equipo in honor of his father’s passionate influence. The goal of this GoFundMe is to provide new digital cameras to the students and the equipment will be shared by all grade levels from 6th-12th. The equipment will also be used to create and document work for upcoming yearbooks, support school clubs, and share memories from school events and games. The goal is to purchase 6 new intermediate level Canon cameras so that all classes are taught using the same equipment. The benefit of purchasing Canon cameras is the support we are building with the company and a partnership will be built for future Equipo students when equipment needs to be replaced. In the past, Canon has donated printers and given out loaner cameras to help with the photography classes so they have helped support our community beforel. Any donations will be used to buy cameras such as the EOS Rebel T8i EF-S 18-55mm IS STM Lens Kit or something compatible as well as build a photography fund for the Fine Arts department at Equipo Academy. If you could support this GoFundMe by making a donation and then sharing it within your community, it would be greatly appreciated. I know money is tight during these difficult times so please know that even the smallest amount helps get us closer to our goal for our students. Many thanks, The Salgados
