Santa Monica Pony Baseball hopes to bring a team to play baseball in Japan for a 12-day tour in August 2020. Our goal is to expose a select group of 15 Santa Monica Pony youth to Japan and their culture through the sport of baseball and provide for many, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The Asia-Pacific Pony director chose our city to be one of the representative cities for this program out of hundreds of leagues across the United States. This is a real-time opportunity for Santa Monica Pony kids to become ambassadors of our city and connect with the world around them. It is our belief that this trip will provide the kids with much more than baseball: It will not just provide them with the appreciation for new cultures, it will provide them a once in a lifetime cultural and educational opportunity
Santa Monica Pony League players, parents and volunteers make a very diverse group across the city of Santa Monica and its surrounding communities. Our league provides scholarships to families in need, rewards our best students with academic awards and most importantly, champions our athletes to develop key leadership skills. The team that we are sending to Japan is made up of the best young men that our league has to offer, not necessarily by athletic ability, but by leadership skills, compassion and intelligence. The team is an extremely diverse team represented by multiple ethnicities, religions and socioeconomic backgrounds. We want to be able to make this program available to all the kids and not let potential financial limitations that may preclude them from taking this trip. Most of these kids have never traveled to another country and a few of them have never even been on a plane, so this is a once in a lifetime deal for some of them. Our league does not have the budget that “for profit” clubs teams do.
