Discovery Camp is very special! 5th and 6th graders from Hartford, Manchester, and surrounding towns go to Camp Woodstock for a diversity and inclusion, teambuilding, and academic experience. Students learn socio-emotional skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving -- they become prepared to be change-makers and leaders!
HELP US TO BREAK THE CYCLE OF RACISM. Discovery Camp is uniquely positioned to interrupt the growth of prejudicial attitudes at a critical developmental stage. Research shows an impressive correlation between students’ training and skills in empathetic understanding and their academic performance. Our Camp program is for preadolescents because this is the precise moment when a door is open to empathy and care for people who are different from them. This is more important than ever in today's world.
Activities are designed to break down barriers between children who come from a wide variety of life experiences, teach them empathy and teamwork, as well as provide a fun, memorable learning experience for all students. Academic lessons take advantage of the setting, including lessons in STEM subjects and the environment.
About 900 students (from 12 schools) want to attend Camp between now and June 8, 2018. Students attend for 3 or 5 days in the Spring, and classes with different demographics are paired and attend together. Camp costs about $580 per student; families are asked to pay a minimum of $75. Some can't afford even that. Can you help fill the gap?? You will give a child a life-changing experience.
