Desert Alive - Cultivating Abundance
We believe a business truly profits not when it exploits the land and the people, but when it sees the land restored and the people transformed. Our business model is to see agriculture production increase in a win-win-win that heals the land, equips people and grows our business. As the land flourishes, so do the people. And as the people flourish, so does the land. Join us in growing our business of blessing in Somaliland.
The Back Story
My name is Seth or “Yuusuf” as I go by locally. I’m the founder of Desert Alive, and my family and I have been living in Somaliland for more than 12 years – working with communities to increase resilience to drought. The increasing droughts and changing landscape means that what used to work for raising livestock no longer does. And in a region where livestock form the backbone of the economy (and hold a special place in people’s hearts!) that is bad news for rural families: In some areas, droughts in recent years have killed up to 80% of livestock. Something needs to change.
In light of this, we’ve felt called, with our partners, to pioneer running a regenerative agri-business here in Somaliland. The idea is that as we raise and sell goats, sheep, cows and cattle, we strategically utilize them to restore degraded and overgrazed lands in an approach called Holistic Rangeland Management – along with other appropriate approaches and technologies. Where You Come In
In partnership with the Ministry of Environment, we’re launching a 15-year project to pilot and demonstrate Holistic Rangeland Management, land imprinting, and other approaches and technologies that can be utilized for land restoration. We’ve got the land and we’ve got a plan. All that remains is the funds to get us started and operating until we break even. Our financial models show that we’ll be breaking even by year three. To launch this project we need $100,000 for 2021 to help bridge the gap until we become profitable. At which point profits will sustain and grow the business.
These initial capital expenses include:
$35,000 for fencing – both permanent and moveable
$30,000 for a watering point
$10,000 for farmland expenses
Some of the first-year operational expenses include:
$15,000 for employee salaries and office rent
$10,000 for purchasing additional livestock
Thank You for Your Gift
Please prayefully consider a gift of $1,000, $5,000 or $10,000. An annonymous donor has agreed to cover the roughly 2% charged by gofundme - so all of your gift makes it to us. GoFundMe Charity automatically provides a tax receipt for each donation.
Thank you for joining in with us however you feel led. We’re excited to grow this business together and see the land and people flourishing!
