We cannot stress enough the importance of a secular education, especially in developing countries where religion and superstition run wild and rule with an iron fist. The indoctrination of children from an early age effectively disables them to think freely and critically in adulthood, very few of them are able to break away from these mental chains and gain a life of insight and freedom from systems that are designed to keep them poor and obedient to a society that is often corrupt and hypocritical in their moral and philosophical demands.
Secularism does not mean atheistic indoctractination, it means neutrality in the approach of how we view and understand science, evidence and essentially the world around us. It means we demand facts, that we don’t accept concepts of ideas that have not been proven and that we are pragmatic in how we process and adapt information to our lives. These principles have the power to create inquisitive and aware human beings that are more likely to think outside the box, experiment with ideas across all fields of learning and ultimately help create and develop new and progressive solutions for their communities, and humanity at large.
Before anyone on this planet becomes a Muslim, Christian, Hindu, what have you.. remember we are part of the thread in the fabric of evolution. Can we get back to that? Can we jump-start the conversation from that understanding? We have more in common than we have differences. Let us remove those differences one by one by helping one another have a healthy, happy and integrated life in this tiny and frail planet of ours.
About Responsible Charity (RC)
RC develops radical secular education and family programs for children living in slum communities in Kolkata, Pune and Mumbai. Aimed at eradicating poverty, their 15 year plan starts at childhood and ends in college graduation.
-Selection - Identifying children most likely to succeed.
-Scholarship - Full sponsorship in private English medium schools.
Private tuitions in India are standard for middle and upper middle class children that attend private English medium schools. This is impossible to afford for families living in poverty let alone for children in slum communities who barely attend a crumbling and inefficient public school system where they rarely stay in past class 6.
-Mentorship - Private tuitions & personal coaching.
Provides private one-on-one tuition sessions focused on individual support to all the underprivileged children enrolled in our scholarships program, where they receive a fully paid education in reputable private English medium schools in Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune from the time they join us in childhood right until college graduation; just like children from middle and upper middle classes.
Since they cannot get help with their studies at home, interns are assigned to each child and committed to them on a fixed schedule (average of four sessions per child per week, each session lasts two hours.) This guarantees better performance and full integration in the institutions that they attend. Many of their interns are currently in college or are already college graduates and each are prequalified based on specific knowledge of the subjects which the children have difficulty with (math, science, biology, chemistry, history, etc) so that the sessions are particularly targeted for maximum efficacy. Each intern must visit the home of every child they work with along with our staff once a month and deliver personal performance reports to their parents as well as receive and record feedback of the kids’ behavior and development at home. They have a minimum required commitment period of four months with each child they assist; but over 90% of them end up tutoring for over a year! Their influence goes beyond just material review and teaching, several of our senior interns have become role models to our children and have kept in touch with the kids long after they’ve moved on to their careers in other cities and countries. Additionally, they’ve also become financial supporters of RC once they’ve gained employment since they have personally witnessed and experienced the positive impact of their programs.
-Music & more - Creative afterschool programs.
-Community Outreach - Financial assistance for each household.
-Family Planning - Birth control & medical assistance.
-Sustainability - Jobs & income opportunities for parents.
