Suicide rates in Colorado are significantly higher than the national average, and mental health issues are a growing concern in our mountain communities. We will no longer sit on the sidelines as we lose friends and family members. As skiers and snowboarders, we all have our own "Secret Spots" on the mountain that we keep to ourselves. Unfortunately, we also might have our own darker secrets of depression and suicide. Our desire is to share these "Secret Spots” by bringing these issues into the light and inviting others to share their stories of hope. There is support in our communities and we want to provide the opportunity for those that need help to find it. And we know that overcoming these issues needs to be a Team Challenge, because it is not easy for anyone to do so alone.
Event Mission
To raise funds for suicide prevention and mental health awareness, to educate the public on the problems of mental illness and suicide in ski and snowboard communities and to offer practical, healthy solutions moving forward.
Event Description
January 23rd, 2021 at Copper Mountain
The Secret Spot Challenge is the first on-mountain, ski/snowboard scavenger-hunt-style team challenge of its kind. Teams of two to six people search intermediate terrain at Copper Mountain Ski Resort for a number of “secret spots” where they learn about mental health/suicide prevention stats and tools, solve mental puzzles and complete physical challenges.

The physical challenges encourage team-building and transparent peer communication. The mental puzzles include those that educate on the problem of suicide and poor mental health in mountain towns and also equip those involved to practically engage in the effort against suicide. Opening and closing award ceremonies will educate on suicide prevention and mental health awareness. All funds raised will benefit Colorado-based non-profits working to reduce suicide and improve mental health.
Challenge
• Each team will receive a CLUE BAG during the opening ceremony.
• Teams will use these clues to find seven “secret spots” hidden all over the mountain (all accessible by blue & green terrain).
• The majority of each team (more than half of its team members) must be present at each secret spot to perform a challenge.
• Teams will be made up of no less than 2 and no more than 6 participants. If you are NOT creating your own team, you must join another through Crowdrise or at check-in on the day of the event.
