"Literacy can make the difference between the poverty of one generation and the promise of the next." As you entrepreneurs know, reading is a fundamental skill that shapes the minds of young dreamers. 62% of low income children in our state are not meeting 3rd grade reading levels. From birth to 2nd grade, children are learning to read. After the 3rd grade, these children are reading to learn. In order for them to reach their full potential, they must reach this benchmark.
Once Upon A Time…six friends had a wonderful idea – that all children deserve books, no matter their families’ income level
That wonderful idea is now called Page Ahead Children's Literacy Program.
Page Ahead will be providing over 187,000 books for 15,600 Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders in elementary schools in our State! We are making a difference for the children of Washington State.
Low income children don’t have access to books during the summer time. Many of these children are not participating in additional educational opportunities like summer camp, summer school, enrichment programs etc. due to the cost and or transportation barriers that their families face. School libraries are closed and families fear the cost of late or lost book fees. This causes these students to fall further behind each summer which is referred to as Summer Slide. Summer Slide is two-thirds of the reason for low income students not meeting 3rd grade reading standards. We want to help and to invite you to as well! Book Up Summer is an intervention program for low-income elementary school children. It’s a 3-year program that begins with kindergartners; first and second grades are added in subsequent years. Each child selects 12 brand new books to read during the summer. These are the “just right books” they need to stay up on their reading.
Seattle Market Council wants to help raise the money assisting Page Ahead in delivering these books that are needed. We hope you will join us by making a donation. All proceeds are given directly to Page Ahead to buy books!
