As you know, we lost our 19-year-old son Sean to suicide five years ago. For the past 5 years, Sean’s backpack has been traveling around the country on Active Minds' Send Silence Packing tour. Sean's backpack, along with over 1100 others, represent students who lose their lives on college campuses each year. The exhibit’s goal is to end the stigma that surrounds mental illness by raising mental health awareness, inspiring actions for suicide prevention, and connecting individuals to resources. Together we can advance approaches for supporting students well-being and changing the conversation about mental health on campuses, in workplaces and within our communities.
Students today are facing increasing pressures that can lead to mental health issues. Current statistics show that up to 54% of all college students reported feeling overwhelming anxiety and 33% reported feeling so depressed that it was difficult to function. The goal of Active Minds is to advance knowledge about mental health education advocacy and awareness. Building a mental health culture and removing stigma may be one of the most important issues of our time. Peer to peer groups help students feel supported, feel less alone, and allow them to have open and honest conversations in safe space.
Please join us in supporting Active Minds. Through your donations we can continue opening up the conversation and creating lasting change in the way mental health is talked about.
Every dollar raised will be matched by the Sean Keefer Fund.
