Sea Life SOS is an individual-led and community-fueled platform set out to conserve our oceans upon which all life depends. Through campaigns and fundraising, action and involvement, we seek to create a conscious chain to change the future of our blue planet. All fundraising proceeds will benefit non-profit organization Oceana, whose action for ocean conservation spans global policy and ecological management of human activities.
Oceans are a global force of nature and the undeniable foundation of the planet on which we live. Covering 71% of Earth’s surface and providing 95% of space available to life, it is estimated that 83% of the global carbon cycle is circulated through marine waters. The oceans are Earth’s life-support system — and ours along with it.
However, our ecosystem is under attack. From pesticides to industrial discharge, plastic pollution to air pollution, oil spills to overfishing, the threats to our oceans are growing. We recognize that 80% of marine pollution stems from human activities on land. If scientists’ estimates are correct, by 2050 there will be more quantifiable plastic in the ocean than fish. Under the current conditions and level of destruction our world’s oceans can no longer thrive and as marine life continues to perish.
We have no choice but to act. Sea Life SOS pledges not only to live by example to conserve our ecosystems, but also to support the implementation of global policy to protect our future.
Oceana was established by a group of leading foundations — The Pew Charitable Trusts, Oak Foundation, Marisla Foundation (formerly Homeland Foundation), Sandler Foundation, and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund — after a 1999 study in which we discovered that less than 0.5% of resources spent by environmental nonprofit groups in the United States went to ocean advocacy.
At the time, no organization was working exclusively to protect and restore our oceans on a global scale. To fill the gap, our founders created Oceana: an international organization focused solely on oceans, dedicated to achieving measurable change by conducting specific, science-based policy campaigns with fixed deadlines and articulated goals.
Oceana seeks to make our oceans more biodiverse and abundant by winning policy victories in the countries that govern much of the world's marine life. Oceana, founded in 2001, is the largest international advocacy organization focused solely on ocean conservation.
Since its founding in 2001, Oceana has won more than 200 victories and protected more than 4.5 million square miles of ocean. Find out more about how Oceana is helping to save the oceans victory by victory.
