What happens when California has an unusually wet winter and it’s cold and rainy at Swan Center Outreach?
How do we bring 25 horses and a miniature donkey in out of the rain, when we only have an 8 stall barn?
Each horse is buddied up with a best friend, in a stall or in a covered outdoor run, with a big pile of hay. That’s the good news. The not so good news is that, as a result of the rain, we used an extra 100 bags of stall bedding and lost a large portion of our stored hay, due to wet conditions and mold. Our manure and moldy hay pile turned into a massive wet hill, which was very costly to remove. We also lost two of our precious horses – 35 year-old Cherokee and our elderly pony, Little Prince, and their Vet care, medications and burials greatly depleted our Veterinary fund.
Now that the rain has gone, we are in Spring Recovery mode. Our goal is to raise $12,500 to restore our hay, feed and bedding reserves, to replenish our Veterinary fund, to pay for the manure removal project, and to cover hay, feed and bedding costs for April, May and June.
- Feed and Hay = $4600
- Bedding = $500
- Veterinary Fund = $5000
- Manure Removal Project = $2400
