Science For Students by students (SFS) is a 501(3)(c) non-profit run by a group of high school students in San Mateo County with a passion for STEM and an understanding that not all students receive an equal introduction to the field. This inequality supplied the exigence for the creation of SFS in January 2020. Our goal is to provide elementary school students with a fun and interesting opportunity to spark their interest in the STEM field, especially those of socioeconomically disadvantaged families who may not have had other opportunities to do so. It is our firm belief that the sciences should not be gate-kept from children whose families simply cannot afford sending them to pricey extracurricular programs or summer camps. All students deserve these experiences, and we hope to help in supplying them.
SFS holds semimonthly video lessons on Zoom, each taking about 40 minutes and covering a variety of STEM topics through interactive labs. Every student will be assigned an instructor and a small group and will keep the same group every week to build a connection amongst fellow students and hopefully gain confidence in their abilities over time. The groups will consist of no more than five students to ensure that every student receives the necessary attention they need to fully understand each lesson. Every month, students will receive a free kit, either delivered directly to them or picked up on a distribution day at a local school. Each kit contains the necessary materials for the month and is paid for by our sponsors. Our goal is to engage participants through exciting experiments and hopefully prompt them to ask themselves why each experiment turned out the way it did.
