The current COVID crisis has highlighted how much we need science.
At the beginning of 2020, Science for Georgia choose to focus on the Environmental Effects on Poverty. COVID is compounding an already serious problem for those who live in economic uncertainty. Those living in low-income neighborhoods have less access to healthcare and live in poorer air quality – increasing their chance of contracting COVID and then having a worse reaction. They are more apt to have jobs directly impacted by the economic downturn and/or jobs that put them directly in contact with the public.
We are already working with groups that research methods to improve living conditions. Healthy air = healthy lungs. These groups need help turning their science into action items for everyday people, and policy recommendations for policymakers.
$5000 hires a full-time, 8-week, intern who can translate science into action items. Each intern will be responsible for: Identifying scientifically sound solutions. Working with communities to identify plausible actions – what people can do right now – in their homes, for themselves, to improve their health. Distributing this information to people.
To work toward this – any amount is welcome.
