Last year I spent two months volunteering and teaching at a secondary school in a small, underserved village in Tanzania. Together, we were able to raise over $12,000 to provide scholarships to three incredibly grateful students: Einoti, Edward, and Zawadi.
The Orkeeswa school is the only affordable secondary school in the area and is 100% scholarship-based. This community is faced with serious challenges, including extreme poverty, limited assess to basic resources, healthcare, and clean water. There is extreme gender inequality where young girls are not allowed to go to school and are commonly forced into early marriage and early pregnancy.
Our students and alumni are the ones committed to solving these challenges, while preserving the strong culture and traditions of the Maasai tribe.
In March, Orkeeswa students and alumni educated their community about Coronavirus and how to stay safe. They delivered hundreds of pounds of food and necessities to vulnerable families. This school is developing leaders like Zainabu, one of the most inspirational and impressive young women I've ever met. Watch her story here: https://www.ieftz.org/zainabu
My goal is to raise $2,400 over the next 2 weeks. This provides a full scholarship for Edward. I know this year has been extremely difficult for all of us. My hope is that we can continue to provide education to a few students who otherwise would not have the opportunity to go to school.
