This summer, I spent two months interning for Orkeeswa School, a community-based secondary school located in rural Tanzania that provides high-quality holistic education to students in local villages. This was my second experience with Orkeeswa-- I first visited during the summer of 2016 through a global education trip with Groton School, one of Orkeeswa's partners. Throughout both of my experiences at Orkeeswa, and the reason why I wish to return there again and again, I forged invaluable relationships with the students there. Through interactions in dance class, workshops, walks to and from school, run-ins in the market, tea and lunch time, and visits to their homes, each and every Orkeeswa student showed me what it really means to be genuine, kind, loving, driven, accepting, welcoming, hard-working, and how to be a meaningful community member no matter where you go. Even when I am back home and at college, these students continue to inspire me and are the reason why I strive to be a better friend, classmate, sister, daughter, student, and community member.
The Indigenous Foundation of Tanzania (Orkeeswa School) works to provide free education for all of their students through donations and student sponsorship. One of the biggest needs at the school right now is scholarship support. Every student at Orkeeswa School is selected on a scholarship basis and provided a free, community-based education. The Orkeeswa School Scholarship Program is what covers the students' needs and resources at the school, including two hot meals a day, school uniform, books for every class, high quality teachers, sports, arts, counseling, healthcare and wellness services, advocacy and more. Without Orkeeswa School most of these students would not have the chance to pursue their education past elementary school. There are currently over 60 students in need of scholarship support right now. Will you join me in filling this scholarship gap? I am looking for friends and family who will sponsor a student themselves, or who will join me in this group sponsorship of one student-- Saidi!
During my time at Orkeeswa this summer, I had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know Saidi— a kind-hearted, wildly curious 7th grader who loves art, giggles more than anyone I know, and who wants to be an immediate-care doctor in war-torn areas. Almost every day Saidi would wander into the office where I worked to say hello. He welcomed me and other volunteers into his home, offered us avocados from his avocado tree, and asked us meaningful questions in order to get to know us. In order to fulfill his scholarship for this school year, I am looking to you-- friends, family, and other loved ones, to join me in this group sponsorship! All donors, big or small, will be updated throughout this year on Saidi's progress in school, family, extra-curriculars, and life!
