When we read together, we succeed together.
In the 2017-18 school year, only half of Oregon’s third graders met state reading standards, a key indicator of future educational success. Children who are not reading at benchmark level by third-grade are four times less likely to graduate from high school than their reading proficient peers, and that number triples for children in low-income households. This is why SMART (Start Making A Reader Today)'s work matters.
Each year in communities across Oregon, SMART brings together thousands of adult volunteers and students aged PreK to third-grade to connect over books. As they read together, they share countless stories, adventures, and laughter, build essential skills, and establish a love of reading and learning. To foster reading outside the classroom, each student also receives 14 new books to keep throughout the school year.
This year, SMART provided on-one-one reading support to over 11,000 kids and gave away more than 140,000 books. Over the past 26 years, 134,000 volunteers have read with over 211,000 Oregon kids and SMART has given away more than 2.7 million books.
We need your support to provide these life-changing gifts for children. Through Lawyers for Literacy, our goal is to provide critical reading support to 100 students participating in SMART in the Portland Metro area.
