Like many of you, we are facing unprecedented precarity and financial ruin because of the COVID-19 crisis. However unlike many Western nations whose governments are stepping in to provide much-needed help through programs like expanded unemployment or stimulus packages, our community in rural Thailand-- many of whom are undocumented refugees-- have no access to support.
Since January, travel restrictions and health concerns about the coronavirus resulted in the near evaporation of tourism in Thailand. More than 99% of our bookings have cancelled. For communities like ours that rely entirely on tourism, this is devastating. We need your help to stay afloat!
At Chai Lai Orchid, we are more than just an eco hotel and elephant rescue— 100% of our proceeds to fund Daughters Rising, our non-profit that combats human trafficking by empowering indigenous women (the same women you might have met at Chai Lai working at our front desk or cafe!). Every dollar spent at Chai Lai goes towards the ethical care of our elephants, funds our vocational training program, pays for our youth outreach initiative, and supports scholarships for ethnic minority women. Without Chai Lai, 20 brilliant girls will lose their scholarships and access to education, 30 hardworking employees will lose the ability to support their families and 15 elephants will go back to being abused, hungry and worked to death.
We understand that we are all facing unprecedented hardships during this pandemic, and we are truly thankful for any help in these difficult times. We’re wishing everyone health, love and solidarity.
