John Steinbeck was born in 1902 in the family home on Central Avenue in Salinas California. The home was purchased and renovated by 8 women who wanted to showcase Salinas Valley Produce and gourmet meals inspired by the early 1900's home cooking reflective of the homes history. It reopened with volunteers serving the meals in 1974. Many of the original photographs and furniture are preserved in the house and The Best Cellar Gift Shop is housed in the basement. Up until March 2020 when Covid-19 caused the Monterey County Health Department to close restaurants. They were then allowed to offer take out, but it was not enough to sustain the house, so staff was laid off and the House closed in August 2020. We are hoping to reopen in 2021 when this season passes; however, we have exhausted much of the working capital to continue until then and need the public's help to sustain it until we can once again welcome community members and Steinbeck fans from all over to visit for lunch and tea.
