In 2019, we saved 41,000 acres of Lake Atitlán's surface water from cooking oil contamination, 128% of its surface area. We collected 19,375.4 liters of cooking oil and delivered it to our partner organization which recycled the oil to create soap.
This year has been off to a difficult start and we need your help.
Support our stellar staff and help fund our oil collection program for 2020.
Meet Julio (pictured above). Julio is one of our committed teammates and he manages oil collection for 6 communities around the lake. Like many organizations, we've been struggling to keep our programs running and funded during the pandemic. Julio, rather than allowing the project to freeze, volunteered to do his job pro bono for the past month. For him, this project was simply too important to abandon. "In my lifetime, I’ve seen the changes that the lake has suffered," he said. "In 2009, I was working for an environmental organization and I saw the cyanobacteria bloom that was affecting the lake. We were all alarmed, and the lake was turning ugly. It was a very sad moment for us."
"We have to give back to the lake. It gives us so much- tourism, beauty, tranquility, peace. It’s time for us all to put in the effort and the work to conserve Lake Atitlán."
