The Bridgeville Community Center was notified that the funding source we use to pay for our share of the program is no longer available and this leaves us scrambling to replace these funds. This is a very important food program for our students in Bridgeville and we, as a community, need to heed this call to action and do everything we can to replace these funds. Any amount will help to keep this vital program going. Thank you for your time.
For years the Bridgeville Community Center (and community partners including the Humboldt Network of Family Resource Centers) has partnered with Food for People to implement the "Backpacks for Kids" program at the Bridgeville School. The "Backpacks for Kids" program sends food home on Fridays during school months to help provide extra nutrition for our most vulnerable students while home on the weekends. The Backpacks for Kids program helps close the gap for many local schoolchildren, to reduce the stress of weekend hunger and to help children develop into their healthiest and most successful selves. Children who come to school well-fed on Monday morning behave and perform better in their classrooms, which helps them and their peers succeed in school.
You can donate here through gofundme, at the community center or on our Facebook page or website, on Food for People's website at https://interland3.donorperfect.net/weblink/weblink.aspx?name=E86105&id=9
or you can call them at (707) 445-3166, and press 3, or email their Development Director Carly Robbins at firstname.lastname@example.org, to make a donation and let them know it is for the Bridgeville Backpacks for Kids program.
More on Backpacks for Kids:
60% of Humboldt County children are eligible to receive free or reduced-cost meals at school. For many working and struggling families, these meals are a blessing and help keep children fed in difficult times. However, school meals are not available on weekends, and many children go home to empty cupboards. Being at risk for hunger over the weekend makes it difficult to complete homework and come to school on Monday on time, healthy and ready to learn. The Backpacks for Kids Program provides income-eligible children with a bag of kid-friendly food on Fridays during the school year. Food for People provides the food for the program and dedicated community volunteers pack and deliver the backpacks to each school site. Each bag contains enough food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for two days.
