COVID-19 Impacts the Poorest
EllieFunDay partners with marginalized artisans in India while paying them a fair-wage to make our baby, kids and women's clothes and gifts. Due to the global pandemic, our partner artisan sewing units were hard hit because of the government’s lockdown of the entire nation. Tragically, the government gave no forethought to the economically poor. To stay at home, you have to assume that homes are safe (non-abusive relationships), that clean water is accessible and that children have access to the internet for remote education.
For EllieFunDay, the pandemic impacted us on multiple fronts. The Indian lockdown halted all major transport and we were unable to reliably export products out of India. Additionally, with stores unable to open or going entirely out of business due to the closure of the US economy, our wholesale orders dropped dramatically -- we were, in every way, caught in the middle.
In light of the current situation, we’ve decided to hibernate our business indefinitely and until we have better clarity on the impact the pandemic will have on life and the economy.
However, we’re still committed to supporting our artisans.
Without work, it’s virtually impossible for our partners to feed and care for their families. Children are also impacted since local schools provide many life essentials, including menstrual hygiene products for girls. Currently, we have leftover production fabric at these sewing units that can be used to produce face masks and menstrual hygiene products for the local community.
This is where we can use your help!
We’re aiming to raise $20,000 to cover the production of 10,000 reusable masks and menstrual hygiene products which will sustain the sewing unit for the rest of 2020. Not only will it provide much-needed work for our artisans but it will help them tangibly care for the community around them. All donations are tax-deductible through EllieFunDay's non-profit arm, Handcrafted for Life.
We will also work with the area medical clinic and community leaders to distribute these necessary items to the local community in the town of Dharmapuri, India where our partners are located. We have a long-term relationship built on trust that the products made will be used specifically for their intended cause and the salaries paid go directly to the women artisans to help feed their families.
The pandemic has been challenging for everyone (including ourselves) -- but it’s also opened opportunities for us to improve the lives of those around us. We believe with your help, anything is possible.
Thank you dear friends of EllieFunDay, Handcrafted for Life. We are ever appreciative of your support during this time!
