I may only be 13 but i think it is truly heart breaking that people kill Rhinos simply for their horns. The Rhinocerous is one of the planet's most beautiful and spectacular animals and is truly a wonder.
Sadly, these amazing animals are becoming rarer with every passing day, due to human activities such as poaching, the illegal killing of an animal.
I felt that I could not just sit and watch these iconic animals go extinct. So I decided to support the African Wildlife Foundation when I was looking for ways to get involved with trying to save and protect endangered animals, their habitat and the people trying to save them on the ground.
Did you know, the horn does not even have any medical purpose and is simply the same protein found in our fingernails? Once stolen, the horn is then sent to places like Vietnam and China where it is sold illegally for thousands of dollars.
It is estimated that 3 Rhinos are killed every day by ruthless, heartless poachers. For one subspecies, the Northern White Rhino, poaching has pushed them to the brink of extinction. In fact, the last male Northern White Rhino 'Sudan' died 2 years ago on 19th March 2018. Now, there are only two left in the entire world and they are both females.
Just think, the devastation is all down to one thing, the trading of horn. But we can still make a difference as medical advances in reproduction, combined with unprecedented human effort are working to bring the subspecies back from the brink and create a new future.
So, I urge you to please consider donating to support positive action for change. Any amounts are welcome and with your help, I hope to be able to have a future with the amazing Rhinocerous in it, becasue without it our world would be much poorer.
