David Omenukor Foundation, a non-profit (501 ) ( c ) dedicated to the eradication of cancer in the society, is seeking to raise one million dollars ($1,000, 000) to reach out to 10,000 women in Nigeria to provide them with free breast cancer screenings beginning from early December 2020.
This is because the World Health Organization lists Nigeria as one of the countries with the highest cancer mortality rates in the world, with four out of five cancer cases resulting in death.
Last year, no less than 115,950 Nigerians were diagnosed with cancer, and 70,327 died from the disease according to the Global Cancer Observatory.
Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death amongst Nigerian women and the most prevalent form of all cancers in Nigeria, comprising 22.7 percent of all new cases of cancer and 37 percent amongst women. It is estimated that 1.7 million new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed worldwide with Nigeria recording 102,000 new cases each year. Preventable deaths and severe pain are ravaging these rural communities and the foundation believes we can collectively save these wasting lives as well as reduce the pains.
These rural communities have no access even to the ill-equipped hospitals in their communities due to extreme poverty and are usually diagnosed with breast cancer at a very late stage.COVID-19 pandemic which adversely impacted the healthcare system worsened their predicament increasing their health and economic challenges.
David Omenukor Foundation has been battling for the last five years to heal and comfort these communities and remove their death sentence from cancer through free mammograms but our effort alone can only scratch the problem. The foundation has organized more than 25 medical missions where free screenings in all types of cancer were provided including breast cancer.
We invite individuals and corporate bodies to join our efforts to end the pain, agony, and deaths in these rural communities by contributing to the GO FUND ME. No amount is small, you can decide to sponsor one, and two or more persons as you are lead. Each screening costs N40,000. This gesture would help to detect early cancer polyps and save many lives from the death sentence they are suffering from breast cancer.
