We provide a wrapped Christmas gift, refurbish their school supplies and hats and mitten to each child that would otherwise not have a Christmas present. Due to the economic crisis that our country is experiencing right now our avenues of donations has dropped significantly and we are distressed with the idea that we will not be able to provide presents for each child that we have helped previously and we feel the need will be even greater this year with so much unemployment. Santa's Mitten Maids is a 501C3 non-profit that has been in existence for 35 years. Our focus of Christmas gifts to the kids in our area of Squaw Lake on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation (Gaa-zagaskwaajimekaag in the Ojibwe language) in north-central part of Minnesota has a high percentage of unemployment. We've served up to almost 400 kids per year. Besides the children in our area we also give presents to the Advocates for Family Peace in Itasca County. We also work with Second Harvest Food Shelf and take care of all the presents for the food baskets they distribute in our area saving the donations they get for the other areas they provide for. We are a rural community area that is 45 miles one way to a larger town that has like Wal Mart, Target or other shopping needs. Our area donation are fantastic but we just don't have a large base for donations. When we have enough funds we provide a pillow or blanket for each child. Any amount donated is appreciated because small amounts also add up and become enough to buy presents. Thank you so much for considering our organization a worthy cause for your donations. Receipts will be issued on request for one.
