Two of the greatest challenges facing humanity in the 21st century are climate change and poverty. The first will require a concerted effort to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The second will require a concerted effort to mobilize broad support for a Universal Basic Income. Now, there is a solution that can accomplish both: Ending Poverty with Solar Energy (EPICS). EPICS is designed to provide a UBI to every individual through a solar dividend earned by the sale of solar electricity from the Solar Energy Commons, And the UBI will not be paid through taxes but from the sale of safe, clean solar-generated electricity (see https://sustainablesystemsfoundation.org/ending-poverty-in-california-through-solar/for more details).
The Sustainable Systems Research Foundation, a green think tank in Santa Cruz, is working to design and deploy three solar microgrids that will pilot the concept and practice of community energy.
The Santa Cruz Community Solar Microgrid, along with a parallel project in Watsonville, is designed to be an EPICS pilot. Excess revenues from the sale of electricity to customers will be used to fund a Basic Income project in Santa Cruz. The project will also provide resiliency to essential facilities in the event of a blackout or emergency power shutdown.
