I just had a birthday party and instead of asking for presents, my mom and I decided to ask for donations towards a non profit. I know there are many issues we could and can be supporting like Australia fires/climate change, homelessness, sport for change (my mom's work), etc. When she told me about gun violence and what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary many years ago, I picked it. I had remembered my own shelter in place drill that we had done at school and how much I disliked everything about it. The hiding. Knowing my exits. Having to be prepared at any second for something terrible to happen . And to think that that happened, is too much.
And then we found out over the holiday break that a young person who used to go to my school was robbed, shot and killed. Their siblings still go to my school. I just don't understand why this has to happen.
So, I know it's asking a lot but I thought maybe we could keep the donating going. At the party, we had about $100 donated and now we're hoping we can raise a total of $500 to go towards preventing gun violence in schools. Or gun violence. Or just all violence. Sandy Hook Promise looks like an inredible organization that can help our schools, and our world, be safer.
The $100 donated at the party has been contributed in honor of the student who went to my school, Joseph Lopez.
Thank you so much to everyone who donated at the party. I'm so lucky to have such giving and supportive humans in my life.
