I am proud that I have been selected to run with Team Samaritans in the 2020 Boston Marathon! I am thrilled to be a part of this great organization for all the good work they do. I am also very honored that I will be able to dedicate this run to our Bride, Mother, Sister and Friend - Maggie O’Leary.
All of us who knew Maggie knew she was the life of every event and the biggest cheerleader in all our lives. Many also know that Maggie struggled throughout her life with depression. Her struggles ended in January 2017 when Maggie took her own life. Her suicide was a tragic step she took because she felt she had no other solution to the feelings of sadness she faced everyday. Despite all the efforts of her wonderful family and friends, Maggie felt alone.
While Maggie’s death was tragic, it does not define her life. Her life is defined by her art, her photography, her gardens, her adventures, and most importantly, by her influence on all of us who loved her dearly.
What I am learning through my difficult healing journey is the need to be open, honest and talk about destigmatizing suicide. Samaritans has trained volunteers listening day and night, offering support to people who are struggling. Most importantly, they offer the resources to take action to prevent suicide. Your generous contribution, in Maggie’s memory, will allow Samaritans to continue their good work to save lives.
At her memorial, Father Jimmy said that this is not the end, but another chapter in Maggie’s story. That rings so true now, as we, her friends, family and all who knew her, have the opportunity to keep Maggie’s story alive. What better way to honor Maggie than by helping others.
The Samaritans mission “You are not alone.” is a clear message for all of us. It helps remind us that Maggie is always with us. For over 40 years, this non-profit has been helping families and friends cope with the loss of a loved one to suicide. I have committed to raising $12,000 for the Samaritans. I’d gratefully appreciate your generous donation to Samaritans to help me reach my 2020 fundraising goal. Your donation will help write that next chapter in Maggie’s story and honor the beautiful person we will never forget.
