Rainbow Family (LGBTQ+ folks) and Allies,
We have a need in our community.
We have a dream for our community.
A place where it is safe to be.
When someone comes out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer not everyone is accepting - people can lose their jobs, their families, their housing situations, and/or their lives. Depending on the situation, everything can be at risk. And when those things are lost, we want to have a safe place for people to go to - to rest their head, to be themselves, and to figure out their next steps.
Safe To Be is a non-profit for LGBTQ+ folks who have lost their housing situation after coming out. It will be especially trans-inclusive because those are the folks most often left behind and forgotten about. The end goal is to provide shelter/housing for these folks in an area that is inclusive and welcoming of diversity. It's been difficult to find such a location in the South, but we believe we've found it in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.
Essentially, Safe To Be will be creating a tiny-house community for LGBTQ+ folks in an town central to Dallas, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Memphis (we will, however, welcome folks from anywhere in the country).
This is a community project.
We all have to come together and make this happen.
