In 2002, I was lying in a hospital bed and told by doctors I'd never walk again. What a scary thought! I worked tirelessly in rehab to forge a path to recovery. Through hard work, dedication, a commitment to living a healthy lifestyle and my personal determination to walk again I have come a long way. I feel healthier than ever and have accomplished more than I ever thought I could.
I've always enjoyed staying fit and working out, but I despised running. In November 2018, I decided to sign up for the Shape Women's Half Marathon in April 2019 after being nagged by a friend to try running a race. As of January 1st 2019, I couldn't run one mile, but had a half marathon to train for. I bought some lined running pants, signed up for a virtual training course, faced the frigid cold NYC weather and started running on the west side highway. After being diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, I felt discouraged that I would not be able to power through and accomplish running 10miles - and how would I ever be able to get to 13.2 miles.
April came around and I ran my 1st half marathon!
I made it to the finish line with my parents there cheering me on. I felt like I had accomplished the biggest achievement and realized I also started enjoying running. Next up, NYRR invited me to run the Poplar Brooklyn Half Marathon alongside 50K men and women a few weeks later and then I went on to run the Hamptons Half Marathon this past September. Along the way there were a few smaller 5k and 10k races in between.
I hope my story of perseverance can help inspire others that hard work and dedication can pay off. Join me in helping to support Safe Horizon, the largest victim services nonprofit organization in the United States, providing social services for victims of abuse and violent crime in 57 locations throughout the five boroughs of New York City.
This charity has helped more than 250,000 individuals each year. They provide compassionate and expert support for people who have faced domestic violence, sexual abuse and child abuse, human trafficking, rape, sexual assault, and violent crimes.
By March 5, 2020 my goal is to raise $1,500 for Safe Horizon. I am asking for your show of support to reach my goal.
Thank you in advance for your support.
See you at the finish line on March 15th, 2020.
