As if the year 2020 hasn’t been cruel enough already, our small, family-oriented swim team suffered another huge blow when a devastating fire wiped out our entire pool shed, burning all of our team equipment and supplies.
We are the SAC Sailfish, a small, but growing team of about 80 swimmers, ages 6-18, and one very dedicated swim Coach. In the early morning of December 18, firefighters responded to a structure fire at the Parkway Swimming Club, where our team holds practice. Fire crews extinguished the blaze, but our storage shed and everything inside was a total loss, including our Coach’s handwritten practice journals which contained countless years of notes on each of his swimmers. Fortunately, no one was hurt and our practice pool remained intact.
Nearly everything else that was lost in the fire can be replaced and our dedicated swim families wanted to create this fundraiser to share our story and ask our community to support us in our recovery efforts.
Your support will help our team replace some of the following equipment lost in the fire:
~Training Equipment (fins, kickboards, pull buoys, paddles, etc)
~Swimmer Headsets for Coach to give feedback to swimmers while they’re swimming
~Team Merchandise (swim caps, face masks, apparel, etc)
~Communications Supplies (whiteboards, corkboards, calendar, swimmer recognitions, laminated posters for USA Swimming Safe Sport & Club Recognition requirements, etc)
~iPad (videos used to give visual feedback to swimmers)
~First Aid Kit
~Shelving, cabinets and other storage items
Our team began in 2016 as a fall/winter seasonal USA age group swim team, operated through a small neighborhood pool (Parkway Swimming Club), and by 2018 we had become a year round USA team. Our Coach and heart of our team, Terry Peyton, had a vision to show his swimmers the benefits of year round practice and help them reach their goals faster. Several parents stepped up and worked with Coach Terry to make his vision a plan and create the non-profit organization, Sacramento Aquatics Club Parent Booster (SACPB) which runs the year round swim program.
After the shutdowns in March 2020 due to Covid-19, we were able to start practicing again with Covid restrictions in place. Our goal has been to provide a safe place with some sense of normalcy for our swimmers to be active and help protect their mental & physical health while so much has changed in our youth’s lives and activities have been shut down due to Covid-19. Being able to practice six days a week provides our swimmers the mental and physical outlets they need to stay healthy and do better academically as well.
So much was lost in the fire but not what matters the most, our swimmers and their desire to excel. With your help, this will be just a minor setback to our team. Our motto… which we live by... Strong As One, Stronger Together. Thank you for supporting our swimmers!
