Ryder, 1 year old, came to our attention on Thursday July 16th when one of our supporters sent us the South Carolina Craig's List ad with a price of $250. Naturally, we reached out to the owner. As life would have it she bought him off of Craig's List from a woman who promised to return her money if things did not work out. After less than 24 hours she tried to return him only to find out that the woman had moved to another state.
His new family had no Weimaraner experience, has a small dog already in the house, has a bird in the house, has three children (youngest is 3 years old), and both adults work full time. Without a crate Ryder had the run of the house when every one was gone all day. On his first day there he ripped down the blinds in the front windows. Our suggestion was for them to crate him during the day and even offered to place a Petco order for one if it meant he could stay; they did not take advantage of our offer. On the second day he counter-surfed the mom's pocketbook. Shreaded the pocketbook, destroyed an expense wallet and got into the mom's medications. We were called when she was on her way home from work. "He has to leave tonight!"
Fortuntately we were able to find a foster for him 35 minutes away. Unfortunately for him, the medication he injested was Adderall and was in major distress when he was dropped off at the foster family. Within an hour he was at the emergency Vet being treated for an Adderall overdose; it's estimated that he consumed 180 mg of Adderall...5 times the amount considered dangerous by Poison Control. Thankfully the doctors were able to stablize him, get his fever down from the 106 when he walked in the door. 36 hours later, $1600 worth of emergency care, lots of prayers, little sleep and he was released from the hospital.
